We at Swansea Bay Construction Support Group, are excited to announce the nominees for our upcoming Apprentice Awards, taking place on June 26th at the Swansea.com Stadium. Each year, we celebrate the hard work and achievements of new entrants, apprentices, and rising stars in the South Wales construction industry. Here are our fantastic technical apprentice nominees for 2025:
Cory Westermark – Morganstone Construction
Cory has brought outstanding enthusiasm, determination, and a strong desire to learn, making him a vital member of the team at Morganstone Construction. His leadership potential is evident through his ability to manage diverse tasks, provide clear direction, and maintain excellent planning and safety awareness. Cory works well with others, communicates effectively with clients and the supply chain, and consistently demonstrates strong timekeeping and problem-solving skills—making him an invaluable asset.
Dan Merrick – Craftsman Flooring
Since joining Craftsman Flooring in 2021, Dan has shown exceptional dedication to both his academic and professional development. After completing his BTEC and HNC in Construction, he advanced to study BSc (Hons) Construction Project Management at the University of South Wales. Balancing his studies with his role as Assistant Project Manager, Dan has become a highly trusted and respected member of the management team, consistently contributing to the success of company projects.
Kal O’Donnell – R&M Williams
Kal joined R&M Williams in late 2023 and quickly demonstrated a keen interest in the commercial side of construction. After gaining valuable on-site experience, he transitioned to the head office where he supports quantity surveyors and manages his own framework contract. Kal has excelled in tasks such as estimating, cost management, and CVR reporting, often exceeding targets, such as securing a 17% cost saving on a package and streamlining labour payment processes. His proactive learning and commitment to development make him a standout member of the commercial team.
Jess Davies – John Weaver
Jess moved into the construction industry in 2024 after a 12-year career in healthcare, demonstrating exceptional drive by self-funding her Environmental Health degree and
securing hands-on experience with JWC through her own initiative. Now a Health and Safety Environmental Trainee at John Weaver, Jess has become integral to the team; carrying out audits, managing Smart Waste, and supporting environmental and safety initiatives. She has earned multiple qualifications including NEBOSH, IOSH, SMSTS, and scaffolding inspection, while also championing women in construction and supporting career outreach events. Balancing work, studies, and raising four children, Jess’s rapid development and dedication make her an exceptional addition to John Weaver.
Curtis Richards – Tilbury Douglas
Curtis joined Tilbury Douglas in August 2023 and is currently studying for a HND in Quantity Surveying, quickly establishing himself as a reliable, high-achieving team member. He has shown leadership in various responsibilities like reviewing the subcontractor supply chain, preparing tenders, and organizing CPD sessions. Curtis frequently goes above and beyond, mentoring new trainees and presenting to senior leadership, often taking on responsibilities beyond his role. Known for his initiative, curiosity, and exceptional academic performance, Curtis is highly respected by colleagues and mentors alike, making him an outstanding candidate for this award.
Liam Miles – Tilbury Douglas
Since joining Tilbury Douglas in 2023, Liam has proven himself as a proactive and dedicated member of the Quantity Surveying team while studying for his HNC. He plays a key role in project delivery, regularly engaging with subcontractors, clients, and colleagues, and has even chaired pre-letting meetings. Known for his strong IT and BIM skills, Liam is deeply committed to professional growth, frequently attending training sessions and contributing to process improvements. He also supports social value initiatives, such as local foodbank efforts. With plans to progress to a BSc, Liam’s motivation and work ethic set an excellent example for aspiring professionals.
Sean Bamber – Morganstone Construction
Throughout his time at Morganstone, Sean has demonstrated a proactive and dedicated approach to learning, balancing his college studies with hands-on experience on the Beacon Hill project. His strong commitment to excellence is evident in his rapid development and the respect he has earned from colleagues. It is clear that Sean has quickly become a valued and integral member of the Beacon Hill team. He communicates confidently across all levels, consistently shows maturity and professionalism, and fosters a positive site environment through his respectful attitude and punctuality. His ability to give clear instruction and take initiative highlights his emerging leadership potential, positioning him for a successful future in construction management.
Rhys Cosker – Premier Forecourts and Construction
Rhys has consistently demonstrated an excellent work ethic and eagerness to learn during his time at Premier Forecourts and Construction. He has gone above and beyond expectations, developing strong AutoCAD skills to support his role while expanding his understanding of above and below ground fuel infrastructure and the civil works required for installations and maintenance. His supplementary site experience has deepened his knowledge of set-up and safety, enabling him to produce detailed site layouts. Within the maintenance department, Rhys has completed take-offs and pricing work, preparing client quotations that have led to multiple successful orders. Always professional and well-presented, Rhys continues to be a valuable asset to the team.
Jake Howells – ASW Property Services
Jake has made strong progress since joining ASW in 2024 as an apprentice Quantity Surveyor. He has shown a clear willingness to learn and has quickly adapted to the demands of the role. Over the recent review period, Jake has developed a good understanding of measurement techniques, tender documents, and cost reporting. He has supported senior surveyors on various projects and is growing more confident in communicating with contractors and stakeholders. Jake approaches tasks with enthusiasm, asks questions when needed, and has shown a proactive attitude toward learning. He has also built solid organisational skills, helping manage project documentation and assisting with cost reports. With continued support and experience, Jake is on a promising path to becoming a reliable member of the commercial team.
