SBCSG Awards 2025: Meet our Scaffolding Apprentice Nominees

We at Swansea Bay Construction Support Group, are proud to reveal the shortlisted scaffolding apprentice nominees for our 2025 Apprentice Awards, taking place on June 26th at the Swansea.com Stadium. Our annual event celebrates the dedication, progress, and potential of apprentices across the South Wales construction industry. This year, we’re especially excited to introduce the scaffolding category – marking the first time this award has been included in our Apprentice Awards:

Kian Godsall – Trust Scaffolding

Kian joined Trust Scaffolding in 2021 after working as a roofer’s labourer, a role that didn’t quite suit him – but it quickly became clear he had the intelligence, attitude, and work ethic to succeed in scaffolding. He gained valuable hands-on experience early on, and when the opportunity arose to enrol him on an apprenticeship programme, it gave him the chance to strengthen his theoretical knowledge alongside his practical skills. Kian progressed well through his training, receiving consistently positive feedback from college tutors, and is now a fully qualified scaffolder. Often the youngest in the team, he confidently leads on a variety of residential, industrial, and commercial projects; interpreting drawings, liaising with clients and contractors, and making sure his team works safely and effectively on site.

Ben Tonkin – Spartan Scaffolding

Ben joined Spartan Scaffolding in August 2023, beginning in the yard to build a solid understanding of materials and equipment before moving on site under the mentorship of experienced scaffolder Darren Burge. Since then, he has gained valuable experience on major projects such as Caerphilly Castle, Ty Elwyn Council Offices, large temporary roofs in Newport, the IP5 medical facility, crash decks at Dunbia Foods, and scaffolding for the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. Ben has quickly become an asset to the team, known for his strong work ethic, excellent timekeeping, eagerness to learn, and positive attitude. With his rapid progress and dedication, he is well on track to becoming a top scaffolder, following in the footsteps of both his father and uncle.

Cian Griffiths – Absolute Scaffolding Wales (ASW)

Cian started scaffolding in 2023, initially working on site as a labourer before progressing to second fix, with his skills and confidence continuing to grow each day. One of his favourite projects so far has been a large temporary roof installation in Treharris, where he worked alongside the scaffolders fitting beams and roof sections. He has also gained valuable experience on high-rise apartment blocks at Victoria Wharf in Cardiff, working on structures up to 19 lifts high. Cian credits much of his development to the guidance and support of Frank Watson, ASW’s Contracts Manager, who has been a key influence during his time with the company.

Kai Williams – Absolute Scaffolding Wales (ASW)

Kai joined ASW Scaffolding in 2023, just a few weeks after Cian, and quickly adapted to life on site. Starting out as a labourer, he soon progressed to second fix and has been developing his skills and confidence ever since. One of the highlights of his scaffolding journey so far has been a project in London, working on towers up to 19 lifts high – a great learning experience and an enjoyable change of scenery. Kai names ASW’s Managing Director, Carl Hendy, as his biggest influence to date, with Carl’s support and leadership helping to drive his ambition and growth within the company.
