We are delighted to announce the trade apprentice nominees for our annual SBCSG Awards, taking place on 25 June at the Swansea.com Stadium.
This year’s nominations recognise apprentices, new entrants and rising talent from across South Wales construction, each making strong progress within their chosen trade while contributing to live site work. The shortlist brings together individuals working across plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and other site-based roles.
Here are our trade apprentice nominees for 2026:
Rhys Maddocks – R&M Williams
Rhys, a third-year painting and decorating apprentice at R&M Williams, has grown from a shy and reserved young apprentice into a mature, conscientious and highly committed tradesperson with a genuine passion for his work. Although he lacked confidence in the early stages of his apprenticeship, both his mentors and site management quickly recognised his eye for detail and natural skill in the application of materials. Over the past three years, Rhys’ development in both painting techniques and professionalism has been a pleasure to watch, with his enthusiasm and dedication making him a valued member of the site team. His strong work ethic and commitment have also been recognised through his college work, where staff have praised his progress and attitude.
Nathan Taylor – John Weaver
Nathan, a Level 3 apprentice joiner at John Weaver, has consistently demonstrated outstanding skill, professionalism and dedication throughout his apprenticeship. Working closely with the Joinery Manager, he has developed a strong understanding of the full joinery process, from cutting lists and machining timber through to marking out and manufacturing bespoke items, while always maintaining high health and safety standards within the workshop. Nathan has contributed to a wide range of projects, including listed buildings, conservation work, education and healthcare developments, where his quality workmanship and exceptional attention to detail have stood out. Praised by his college tutor for completing work ahead of schedule and to an excellent standard, Nathan has built a reputation as a polite, hardworking and reliable apprentice who consistently goes above and beyond to ensure client satisfaction, making him a valued asset to the joinery team at John Weaver.
Nathan Smail – John Weaver
Nathan, an apprentice carpenter, joined John Weaver through the Cyfle Shared Apprenticeship Scheme and has impressed from the outset with his enthusiasm, dedication and ability to progress both at college and on site. His strong work ethic, positive attitude, and excellent site feedback led to him being taken on permanently by the company at the end of April. Having achieved a distinction in his Level 2 Carpentry qualification and finishing top of his class, Nathan was also selected to compete in the SkillBuild carpentry competition through his college. Working on conservation and scheduled monument projects, he has shown impressive skill and attention to detail, carrying out specialist repair works using traditional carpentry methods and materials, including dovetail joints and Douglas Fir timber. His work has received praise from both site management and architects, with his attitude towards conservation work and ability to quickly develop high-quality craftsmanship making him a valued and highly promising member of the team.
Jack Huggins – Craftsman Flooring
Since joining Craftsman Flooring in February 2025 as a trainee floor layer, Jack has quickly made a positive impression on the team working on the Fairwater School project in Cardiff, due for completion in June 2026. He has proven himself to be a hardworking and reliable apprentice, showing a strong willingness to learn and develop his skills from day one. In a short space of time, Jack has built up a solid understanding of floor laying techniques, demonstrating initiative, attention to detail, and a positive attitude towards every task. He has also played an important role in helping works on site progress efficiently and safely, earning praise as a valued team player with a bright future ahead of him. His enthusiasm, talent, and commitment to learning point towards a long and successful career within the industry.
Leon Lezzi – Swansea Council
Leon, an apprentice electrician at Swansea Council, began his electrical apprenticeship in his 30s, making a significant career change that he has approached with great determination, focus and resilience. Throughout the final stage of his training, he has continued to progress strongly, establishing himself as a highly capable and motivated apprentice. Leon has advanced at pace, completing his apprenticeship portfolio within his second year and passing his AM2 at first attempt, alongside recent recognition including Swansea College Apprentice of the Year and the Worshipful Livery Award. His approach to learning is inquisitive and practical, with a strong focus on understanding both the application and principles behind electrical work. Leon works confidently both independently and as part of a team, contributing to the delivery of safe, reliable electrical services across council projects. He supports the day-to-day work of the council’s electrical team, works well alongside colleagues, and is always willing to step in and help when needed. His recent achievements and qualifications reflect the strength of his progress during training, making him a true asset to the council and the wider construction industry.
Jay Galsworthy – Swansea Council
Jay is an apprentice plumber and gas engineer at Swansea Council, who has consistently shown a level of ability, confidence and professionalism beyond what would normally be expected at his stage of training. He already carries out plumbing work independently, managing jobs from start to finish while maintaining a high standard of workmanship and attention to detail. Jay demonstrates strong problem-solving skills, takes ownership of his work, and consistently delivers outcomes that exceed expectations for an apprentice. His reliability and eagerness to learn have made him a trusted member of the plumbing team, with colleagues regularly relying on his input and support. His performance reflects both natural aptitude and a strong commitment to developing his skills, positioning him as a highly capable and promising tradesperson.
Congratulations to all nominees, and best of luck as we look forward to celebrating their achievements at this year’s awards ceremony.
