At Swansea Bay Construction Support Group (SBCSG), we are committed to supporting the next generation of construction professionals by facilitating apprenticeships, work experience, and tailored development opportunities. One shining example of this is the journey of William Owen, a 17-year-old apprentice from Bridgend who has joined Darlow Lloyd (Construction) Ltd.
Inspired by college courses and vocational pathways, William developed an early interest in construction. His first step into the industry came through a two-week work experience placement with Darlow Lloyd (Construction) Ltd., a company specialising in civil engineering, building works, design and build, and refurbishment projects across South Wales.
Following this placement, the company offered William the chance to continue his learning as a full-time apprentice through the Cyfle Building Skills Shared Apprenticeship Scheme.
Currently, William is gaining hands-on experience on a multi-faceted project known as the Wellness Village, which includes houses, bungalows, flats, and a healthcare Centre. He describes the role as dynamic and engaging, appreciating that every day “brings new challenges and learning opportunities”, all within a supportive team environment.
From William’s first day on site, Darlow Lloyd (Construction) Ltd. has provided clear and structured guidance, helping him learn to use a range of equipment safely, efficiently, and confidently. The company has ensured he receives excellent support and development opportunities, including a designated mentor and hands-on experience working alongside an engineer. This combination has allowed William to build practical skills while gaining real-world confidence on site.
The company maintains an open environment where apprentices can share their ideas. William feels his input is recognised and that his questions and suggestions are taken seriously, allowing him to engage fully in his work.
Even at an early stage in his career, William has made meaningful contributions on site. Recently, he assisted a ground worker with a key task, demonstrating both initiative and a willingness to support the team. William notes that the construction industry is seeing more young people entering the field, and Darlow Lloyd (Construction) Ltd. actively supports this by offering multiple apprenticeship opportunities at various levels.
Being respected and having his opinions considered has made William feel extremely valued on site and within the company, highlighting the positive impact of mentoring and inclusive workplace culture on young talent.
Through his experience at Darlow Lloyd (Construction) Ltd., William is eager to pursue a career in construction and plans to continue his studies at university level.
William encourages other young people considering a career in construction to take advantage of the opportunities available, follow health and safety rules carefully, and approach every experience as a chance to learn and grow. He also sees the wider impact of young talent in the industry, noting that the next generation plays an important role in shaping its future.
At SBCSG, we are proud to support companies like Darlow Lloyd (Construction) Ltd. by providing apprenticeships and work placements that give young people practical, hands-on experience and a clear pathway into the industry. Through focused training, mentorship programmes, and ongoing guidance, we help apprentices develop the technical skills they need while building confidence and feeling respected within the workplace.
