National Apprenticeship Week 2024

Last week was the 17th consecutive National Apprenticeship week. Every year NAW serves as a gathering for all those that champion apprenticeships, aiming to collectively celebrate the values, benefits, and opportunities they offer. The theme for National Apprenticeship week 2024 was “Skills for Life,” encouraging reflection on how apprenticeships can facilitate the enhancement of skills and knowledge essential for a fulfilling career, beneficial to both students, employers and the future of all industries.

To celebrate National Apprenticeship week, Swansea Bay Construction Support Group and Neath Port Talbot College hosted various events to educate young people on what apprenticeships await them and connect students with prospective employers and apprenticeship providers.

Neath Campus, Neath Port Talbot College

In partnership with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and the Industry of Carpenters (IOC), Neath Port Talbot College hosted its first-ever Timber Industry College Hub Event. Featuring a lineup of talks and presentations, the event was a fantastic opportunity for students to engage with employers. Students could explore trade stands, and gain insights into diverse employment prospects within carpentry, joinery, shop fitting, restoration, design, and manufacturing industries, as well as the UK timber supply chain.

Cyfle Building Skills was amongst the many businesses attending the event, meeting with full-time students and employers in the timber and carpentry industry to discuss apprenticeship and work experience opportunities available through the company.

Llansamlet Campus, Neath Port Talbot College

Similar to the Timber Industry College Hub Event, NPTC hosted a careers open day at the Llansamlet campus. From 10.30 am, students could visit various stalls from CITB, Pathways, Cyfle and more. At the event we spoke with parents, employers, current full-time students and prospective students from secondary schools, guiding them through respective next steps and career options.

Jubilee Court, Gower College

Concluding a brilliant week of opportunity, a ‘Meet the Employer Event’ was held at Jubilee court, where employers who were interested in providing apprenticeships to current full-time students could attend, alongside local students and their parents. The open evening was not only a great opportunity for students to ask prospective employers any burning questions, but for parents too, so that they may be involved in their child’s future apprenticeship journey.
